Do you predict the prices of smart cars (the fortwo style) to come down reasonably within the next 2-4 years?

  • I am fourteen years old, and I really want my first car that I buy to be very 'green'. I love the smart fortwos and especially this covertible style http://www.smartusa.com/smart-fortwo-cab... I think many of you would agree that $17,000 is a lot of money to spend on a first car, especially one that is so small. I probably won't buy this car until I'm eighteen and will use my dad's truck (most fuel-efficient in it's class, don't worry) when I'm 16-17. But, I was wondering if you guys think that within the next four years whether or not the price of the smart for two cabriolet will decrease as newer makes come out.

  • Buy a small Honda / Toyota / VW that gets good gas
    mileage.

  • It's hard to say given the state of the economy right not, but even though I love some German cars I won't own any of them anymore because the repair costs are insanely high like 3 or 4 times higher than a normal car and they aren't that reliable either so you can very easily shovel a ton of money into one! So that's one strike against the Smart Car. Repairs on something made by Mercedes it's likely to make you feel too good.

It took a while, but my diehard Honda friends won me over and I've never been happier than with my Civic EX! The car is so reliable and not expensive to keep on the road and drives like a sports car. I can see why they won't ever buy anything else! It seats 5 people, has good trunk space, the steering feels like a sports car, and the Vtec engine makes it a quick car on the highway and it gets me 32 MPG on my daily driving.

I wouldn't even look at a Smart Car since it can't hope to equal my Civic in practicality, it'd be more like driving a golf cart around on the highway and it'd be a very scary driving experience with something so small and so sloow like that around where I live outside of DC unless you want some of those huge speeding trucks and SUV's to run you off the road! I hate those whale sized wastes of resources!

The Smart Car only seats 2 and if you have friends that totally sucks. And did I say it's slow? Yeah, slow, very slow getting up to speed! The only thing people buy it for is to be trendy or want to look green in some circles, but it's not a practical vehicle for many reasons.

I'm a very green minded and minimalist person who's never had a truck or SUV and every single car I've ever owned has been a high-tech 4 cylinder manual shift car that has gotten high gas mileage.

  • I looked a little into the company, and since it was started by a couple of different companies, one of them was Mercedes-Benz. This makes me think the car will run well. But I agree that this is way too much to pay for something that small. There are still four-seaters available for not a whole lot more than that. It's really difficult to tell what will happen in the future since the economy is in such turmoil. It could be that these cars along with all the others will go down in price because nobody is buying. Or it could be that so many people want to buy them that the price stays strong or even increases.

My main concern is for your personal safety. When you first get your license, you will not by any means be a good driver. You will think you are, but there are too many things that only time will teach you. I remember the first car I ever owned I ran into a post the first time I pulled into a parking lot! LOL And the first time my stepson took my car out to drive by himself, he came home in a wrecker. So my recommendation is to get a cheap second-hand car to begin with so you don't blow too much money on any minor accidents.
